MISTAKES EASILY AVOIDABLE
| FAULT | CAUSE | REMEDY |
|---|---|---|---|
A | Speckled appearance of transparent stain | Finish applied on moist or frozen wood, or during wet weather. | Wipe clean and let dry thoroughly - refinish with same stain, or if extremely spotted, apply opaque SAICOS HOUSE&GARDEN- COLOUR or SAICOS BEL AIR. |
B | Water marks on finished surface | Wood surface not properly saturated, or calcium residues. | Re-finish surface, pre-sand if necessary, if applied thoroughly and evenly, water marks are not possible with SAICOS finishes, wipe off chalk marks. |
C | Reduced durability | Old varnish not properly removed, wood with specific ingredients (like Canadian Red Cedar), not suffifiently weathered before applying finish, other causes s. “A“ above. | Examine wood condition, protect finish with additional coat of SAICOS CLEAR OIL FINISH, hardwoods rich in substances must be weathered 3 weeks before treatment. |
D | Less coverage | Raw, unprocessed or stratiated wood surface (consumption approx. 30 % higher), wood surface unusually absorbing (f. i. extremely dry soft wood). | Raw, much absorbing wood pre-treat with SAICOS CLEAR OIL FINISH - equalizes absorbing ability, (note: higher absorbance prolongs durability of finish and is not negative). |
E | Delayed drying | Finish applied too thickly, bad ventilation after application, moisture content of wood too high (max. 20 %). | Wipe off surplus material, ensure good ventilation. |
F | “Wrong“ colour shade | Natural colour of wood surface not taken into account. Transparent colour shades are influenced by wood colour). | Try colour shade out before application. Light transparent colours only apply on light wood (for light colours on dark wood choose light opaque shade of SAICOS HOUSE & GARDEN-COLOUR), or apply one more coat of transparent light shade. Stir well before application. |
G | Odour | Normal: light scent of natural vegetable oils and waxes until finish is dried. | Not detrimental to health, ensure good ventilation after drying, all SAICOS wood finishes are odourless when dried. |
H | Flaking / Peeling | Previous varnish finish not thoroughly removed (therefore no penetration of new finish). Applied on wet or frozen wood. Fungal growth on the wood. Insufficient constructive wood protection (lacking back airing). | Sand down wet wood surface, let dry. Apply SAICOS WOOD IMPREGNATION against fungal attacks. Re-finish, consider constructive wood protection (back airing) when installing the wood. |
I | Discoloration of finish (green/brownish) | Attack of green or brown algae, moss. | Clean wood surface with SAICOS GREEN-EX (self-acting, does not impair colour - biologically degradable, solvent- free, formaldehyde-free). Apply new coat when completely dry, if necessary. |
J | Washing out | Painted on wet wood or finish not dried before rain. Ingredient-rich wood (Canad. Western Red Cedar) should be weathered 2 - 3 months before treatment, applies also to pressure impregnated wood. | Clean spotted surface and re-treat. Remove resin stains with SAICOS BRUSH CLEANER. Re-treat if necessary. |
K | Adhesion problems on exotic hardwoods | Hardwood floors not pre-treated with the extra penetrating COLOR WAX EXTRA THIN (s. directions of use). | Sand down (if necessary, remove finish with SAICOS MAGIC CLEANSER). - When dry and clean, pre-treat with SAICOS COLOR WAX EXTRA THIN, finish with SAICOS HARDWAX-OIL Classic or Premium (quick drying). |
L | Permanently soiled wood floors | Wrong cleaner used. | For optimal easy and effective cleaning and maintenance, use SAICOS cleaning and caring products. |
